# Astra reference notes

[Astra](../versions/astra.html) is an independent rendition of the full [62-piece catalog](watch-face-catalog.md). Its interface, time engine, SVG toolkit, and watch drawings were authored from scratch. Earlier model pages and the active working build are preserved.

Supplied photographs were inspected for case shape, proportions, dial print, markers, hand geometry, apertures and material finish. Manufacturer, museum and dealer images supplement missing references and identify catalog-specific variants. Photographs are research material only; the shipped page contains SVG geometry and no raster watch faces or external dependencies.

The drawings approximate reflected light, brushing, engraving and dial textures with vector geometry. Very small lettering and brand artwork are simplified. The watches show the selected city's time and calendar through the browser's IANA time-zone data. GMT hands show UTC. Chronograph controls measure elapsed time in this browser; power-reserve and complex astronomical mechanisms are visual studies, not instrument simulations. Historical objects whose exact reference could not be verified are identified below.

## Intentional approximations

Sapphire reflections, brushed metal, leather, sunray surfaces and gem facets are analytical SVG approximations rather than optical simulations. Small logos and the Snoopy/Secret Service artwork are redrawn silhouettes and linework. Microprinting and register subdivisions are simplified where necessary to remain coherent at card size. Chronograph displays use the application's elapsed-time controls; they do not claim to simulate movement mechanics.

## Renderer validation

- All 18 draw functions execute against the shared toolkit with no undefined or NaN output.
- An isolated Chromium gallery rendered all 18 with no runtime errors and no duplicate SVG IDs.
- A full gallery capture was visually inspected at 10:10 with seconds and GMT hands away from twelve.
- Main and register hands use explicit pivots; all date apertures have unique clip paths.
- The assembled application is checked for live time, timezone and date boundaries, chronograph controls, interactions, and mobile layout.

## Binding details

`regatta` is a 10-minute reverse countdown across the Yacht-Master II's 300-degree scale. `hour24` is the Jorg Gray right-hand 24-hour time register. The Type XX right elapsed-minute register requests a 900-second revolution; the Zenith lower and Jorg Gray left registers request 3600 seconds. Zenith's main chronograph uses a 10-second revolution while its right register uses 60 seconds. Every ordinary chronograph is at rest until the application's elapsed-time control starts it.

## Astra distinctive timepieces

All seventeen drawings were authored as SVG geometry for Astra. No other model’s HTML, drawing code, or rendered watch output was read or reused. Common Astra material gradients are used for lighting; case shapes, printing, indices and complications are specified per object.

| Key | Photo basis and modeled details | Limits of the study |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `gshock` | Casio’s official DW-5600UE-1 product photograph: stepped square resin protector, screw recesses, four buttons, pale green LCD, cyan printing and recessed display. Working seven-segment hours, minutes and seconds. | The local reference folder was empty; official image substituted. |
| `f91w` | Casio’s official F-91W-1 close-up: thin beveled resin case, blue and gold display border, WR shield, three steel buttons, smaller seconds and separate day/date. | The local reference folder was empty; official image substituted. |
| `apple` | Series 7 Midnight Contour product imagery: softly rounded black case, crown fluting, edge glass reflection, stretched cardinal numerals, continuous seconds. | Catalog does not specify a generation. Chosen interpretation is Series 7 Midnight with Contour; typography is drawn with browser fonts. |
| `seiko5` | Local Seiko 5 Sports SRPD51 product/review images: blue dial and elapsed bezel, Seiko 5 shield, 4 o’clock crown, mixed luminous indices, broad arrow hands, day/date aperture and three-link bracelet. | Macro movement engraving is simplified. |
| `richardmille` | Local RM-011 Felipe Massa front photographs: titanium tonneau bezel, spline screw placements, skeleton baseplate and bridges, three chronograph counters, large date and month aperture, rubber band and colored pusher accents. | Skeleton movement is a visual construction, not an engineering model. Chronograph values use the app’s running time model. |
| `bigbang` | Local Hublot Big Bang Unico images for architecture: six H screws, ceramic ring, lateral pushers, black band, layered open dial and two counters; Red Magic color follows the catalog variant. | The exact Red Magic colorway was absent from the supplied photos. Internal movement bridges and engraving are interpreted. |
| `br03` | Bell & Ross official BR-03 Black Matte photograph: ceramic square case, round inner bezel, four large screws, bold cardinal numerals, luminous sword hands and angled date position. | The local reference folder was empty; official image substituted. |
| `twinbell` | Local Westclox 70010A white-background product image: metal bells, elevated arch handle, striker, angled feet, white dial, serif numerals and luminous black hands. | Alarm set pointer is a decorative fixed feature. Time hands and seconds are live. |
| `bigben` | UK Parliament’s restored blue-dial image: Prussian-blue Roman chapter ring, gilded Gothic spandrels, white radial glass, ornate blue hands and masonry surround. | Tracery is redrawn at display scale. The clock is represented by its dial bay, not the complete tower. |
| `grandfather` | A nineteenth-century Comtoise museum photograph supplied the enamel Roman dial and ornate repoussé brass surround. A provincial wood longcase and glazed pendulum door were constructed around it. | The supplied folder was empty; the catalog’s precise Musée du Temps object was not independently identified. Treat the longcase as a period study, not a verified replica of that individual accession. |
| `howardmiller` | Local Howard Miller grandfather-clock photographs: split pediment, central finial, fluted pillars, moon arch, engraved brass/silver dial, three suspended weights, glazed door and live pendulum. | Local images span several related cases; Chateau model-specific proportions and exact engraving are interpreted. Moon arch is decorative rather than an astronomical ephemeris. |
| `orloj` | Local Prague close-up images: stone bay, restored blue/orange/black astrolabe, double Roman scale, twenty-four-hour outer scale, zodiac/ecliptic ring, Earth, gold solar pointer and two-tone lunar sphere. | Solar/lunar motion is an illustrative time model. It does not calculate Prague sidereal time, historical unequal hours, sunrise or lunar orbital geometry. |
| `freak` | Local black Freak X front image with Carb case material interpreted from catalog: textured dark case, raised indices, rotating skeleton minute carousel, balance wheel, open bridge and separate short hour pointer. | Decorative gears do not simulate an escapement; the full carousel rotates once per hour. |
| `railroad` | Auction photograph of a Norfolk Southern gold hunter pocket watch: black logo dial, speed lines and thoroughbred mark, gold case, opening cover and pendant bow. | The local folder was empty. Auction photo identifies the Norfolk Southern design, but the exact 1994 variant was not independently verified. |
| `grandcentral` | Local 1913 information-booth clock photographs: warm opal dial, partial neighboring dials, cast brass globe, acorn finial, beaded collar and fluted pedestal. | Side-dial geometry is a perspective interpretation. Main opal face shows live time. |
| `mickey` | Local 1933-style Ingersoll front close-up: aged enamel, wire lugs, black leather, red shorts, yellow gloves/shoes and three-Mickey seconds disc. The character’s arms are the live hour/minute hands. | Character details are custom vector paths at watch scale. The small seconds disc rotates; no raster image is embedded. |
| `bigtic` | JR-7845 resale photograph: broad steel bracelet and case, domed dark blue dial, large pale digital seconds beneath two plain analog hands. | Local reference folder was empty. Large seconds are browser-rendered numerals; animation is one numerical change per second. |

Verification: JavaScript syntax checked; all 17 render functions executed without undefined/NaN values; all SVGs rendered through Quick Look and inspected in three contact sheets, then the revised character, skeleton, astrolabe and longcase drawings were rendered and inspected again.

Integration: Digital roots use `data-lcd="hms"`, six `data-digit-index` groups and `data-segment="a"` through `g`. DW-5600 additionally uses `data-field="monthdate"` (M-DD). Mechanical hands specify their own `data-pivot`; `pendulum`, `solar` and `lunar` are explicit animation hooks.

## Astra dress, integrated, and shaped watch studies

All 19 dress, integrated, and shaped renderers embedded in `versions/astra.html` are new SVG drawings. No other model's HTML, renderer, or page code was read or reused. The repository catalog supplied the face keys, full names, and cadences. Shared low-level primitives are private to this new module, and every paint/clip ID is prefixed with the draw instance ID plus `-dr-`.

### Runtime integration

The module calls `Object.assign(FACES, ...)` and requires only the parent `FACES` object. It does not depend on `Q` or `commonDefs`; its own material and construction primitives are enclosed in an IIFE. All renderers return SVG inner markup for a 400 × 440 viewBox.

Moving elements use `data-hand` and `data-pivot="x y"`:

- `hour`, `minute`: all 19 faces. Honor their pivots; Lange is `(160, 211)` and Luminor is `(196, 220)`.
- `second`: 18 faces. Running seconds are in a subdial on Reverso `(200,287)`, Lange `(249,290)`, Portugieser `(200,286)`, Monaco `(139,230)`, Luminor `(116,220)`, Marine `(200,286)`, Patek `(132,221)`, Radiomir `(118,220)`, and Metro `(200,272)`.
- `chrono`: centered chronograph seconds on Portugieser, Monaco, Patek. These can remain at zero until the app's chronograph is running.
- `subminute`: elapsed 30-minute registers on Portugieser `(200,155)`, Monaco `(261,230)`, Patek `(268,221)`. Use a 30-minute revolution, not a 60-minute clock revolution.
- `datepointer`: Villeret `(200,220)` and Patek `(200,285)`. Both carry `data-offset="11.612903225806452"` (360/31), to add to the parent engine's `(dayOfMonth - 1) * 360 / 31`; the printed 31 aligns to 12 o'clock and 1 is one step clockwise.

- `moonphase`: clipped moving twin-moon discs on Villeret `(200,305)` and Patek `(200,303)`. Apply `moonAge / 29.53059 * 180`: angle 0/180 is new moon, 90 is full moon. Villeret has its characteristic moon face; Patek uses a smooth moon.
- `power`: four indicators with upward base geometry, `data-full-angle` / `data-empty-angle` / `data-reserve-hours`. Interpolate `fullAngle + (1 - fractionRemaining) * (emptyAngle - fullAngle)`. Lange `(286,243)` uses 55→125°, 72 h; Snowflake `(176,262)` uses 215→280°, 72 h; Marine `(200,155)` uses -120→120°, 60 h; NOMOS `(217,174)` rotates the reserve aperture sector 0→270°, 42 h. The NOMOS rotating sector is an illustrative visual, not an exact reconstruction of its proprietary reserve mechanism. Nominal reserve figures follow the official [Metro 1101](https://nomos-glashuette.com/en/metro/metro-date-power-reserve-1101), [SBGA211](https://www.grand-seiko.com/us-en/collections/sbga211g), Lange and Marine sources.

Text fields are `date`, `day`, `month`, `datetens`, `dateones`. `day` and `month` expect short uppercase labels, e.g. FRI and SEP. Lange expects one character per `datetens`/`dateones` slot, normally using a blank or zero for the leading digit as desired. Date windows are clipped with instance-specific IDs. The Tank has only hours/minutes and cadence `tick`; Snowflake cadence is `glide`; other entries are `sweep` per the catalog.

### Limits and verification

These are vector interpretations, with shared metal/strap rendering primitives and individually constructed cases/dials. They are not photographs, replicas for manufacture, or measured CAD drawings. Dial lettering uses browser fonts; engravings, surface reflections, and textures are approximations. Moonphase is an animated mechanical-style display driven by the application's lunar-age calculation. Power-reserve indications are a browser-session simulation driven by the application's Wind control, not actual stored mechanical energy. The Patek auxiliary apertures show a day/night approximation and the selected calendar year's position in the leap-year cycle.

All 19 SVGs were generated, parsed as XML, checked for duplicate IDs/undefined/NaN values, and rendered in a contact sheet for visual inspection. Corrections after inspection included a softer Snowflake texture, proper wide Big Pilot hour markers, rounded Nautilus case transitions, rectangular Cartier radial numerals, adjusted Tank/Reverso case proportions, extended baton-hand lume, and clipped date apertures. Final closeup QA also checked moving lunar discs, power pointers, correct 10/20/30 register labels, the Marine round date aperture, and softened brushed-metal bracelet reflections. The renderer section passes inline JavaScript syntax validation through `npm test`.

## Application validation

The final standalone page passed repository validation and a Chromium interaction check: all 62 SVGs render with unique IDs, resolved gradients and clips, finite geometry, and no runtime errors. City addition/removal, persistent settings, individual/all shuffle, collection search, detail focus, chronograph start/stop/reset and offline file access were exercised. All faces were updated at 10:10, 12:00, 03:15, 06:30 and 23:59, including single-digit, month-end and year-end dates. Phone controls meet the 44-pixel target and the layout has no horizontal overflow.
